Papier-mâché was invented in the 18th century by combining mashed paper with hardening agents and glue, so that it could be cut, shaped and even carved. The technique was first used for small items such as snuffboxes and fans. As techniques improved in the mid 19th century, Papier-mâché was used for chairs, small tables, fire screens, coal scuttles, inkstands and more. Most Papier-mâché was finished in black and frequently gilded and painted with flowers, fruit and sentimental scenes. Given the fragile nature of the material, it is remarkable that so many examples exist.

This 19th century Papier-mâché tole tray is in perfect condition. It has fine gold lace like detailing and colorful botanicals along the base of the tray's unique shape. At the center is an English garden folly next to a waterfall. A peacock looks on from the shoreline. This stunning piece of art would complement anyone's home.
