In the early 1800's the British East India Company was formed to carry on trade with Asia and India. As a result, chinoiserie goods such as silk, bamboo, lacquered decor and porcelain became extremely popular in the United Kingdom. One of the biggest fans was George IV (1762 - 1830) He built the Brighton Pavilion as a seaside residence.

Though rooted in Chinese design, chinoiserie is a product of the imagination of the Europeans designers. Chinoiserie style was an artistic representation of all that was strange and unique to the Europeans about the Far East. Brighton Pavilion's interiors were heavily influenced by Chinese and Indian fashion -- with Mughal and Islamic architectural elements. It was a prime example of exoticism -- a shocking alternative to the classic mainstream taste of Regency style of the time.

These antique bamboo pieces are becoming harder to find due to their age, and command a steep price. Furniture similar to this Étagère range in price from $3,500 to $6,500.

If you choose to pick-up your purchase, please be sure to bring enough manpower to move your items into your vehicle. Remember to bring sufficient blankets/bubble wrap/rope if necessary. Patina is not responsible for any damage incurred with your move. We request that all purchases be picked up within 1 week from date of purchase.
